1. Welcome.
By speaking well in public we can gain credibility, become known and markedly increase our networks. People will respect and admire us for doing well and remember us. Only recently I was saying to a client, "Never go to a conference without offering to speak – it is so much easier to become known than by sitting in the audience."
Now more than ever before we are expected to be able to give presentations in our jobs. There are also many occasions when we may be asked to speak in social situations, whether at a wedding or birthday, or at the local church, youth group, sporting club, or community meeting.
However, we don't always do it well. Anxiety, fear or nervousness often takes over, or we are boring or fail to provide our audience with a key message. In fact, some presenters fail to have a message at all. How difficult is that for their audience?
Sadly, when we don't speak effectively in public it can stop us from having our work or ideas recognised and result in our missing out on significant promotions at work or opportunities in life.
A foundation skill for public speaking is the ability to be interesting, engage an audience and maintain their interest. How can you do this? Read on to the tips section to find out.
Welcome to all our new readers from around the world, including this fortnight from Turkey, UK, Nigeria, India, Australia, South Africa and USA. Welcome! Please tell your friends and colleagues about Confidence 4 U - that is the only way the tips can reach more people.
The winner this fortnight, of a free E-book from our range, is nflintoff from Australia. If this is you, please contact us to claim your prize by Saturday 6th September 2008:
2. The TOP TIPS: How to be interesting when speaking in public.
Tip 1: Have spark and passion.
If you project no enthusiasm for your speeches or topics - how can you expect to ignite interest in your audiences? Audiences become energised when speakers have energy and passion for the topics they are speaking about. I don't mean you have to be loud or wild - just an inner enthusiasm conveyed easily is all that is needed. An animated voice, sparkle in your eyes and a smile on your face are a good start. This is why I often meditate before giving a speech and why I try to always have a good night's sleep beforehand. A tired speaker is usually a poor or dull speaker.
Tip 2. Tell a good story to illustrate your point and key message.
The ability to tell a story can make the difference between a captivating speech and a boring speech. When you're giving a presentation include relevant stories in your speeches to illustrate your point and key message. Audiences may remember the stories more easily than the detail.
When you tell a story, make sure it is relevant for the audience. Then put yourself in the story and tell it in the first person, using "I ...". Avoid the third person. Tell the story as it happened without going off on asides, or making comments or jumping all over the place. Build the story up step by step. And make sure it comes to a conclusion and makes a point at the end. Don't just leave it hanging in mid-air! Tell a good story to illustrate your point and key message.
Tip 3. Vary what you do.
VARIETY is what makes the difference between an interesting and a boring speech. Vary what you do - do not just show power-points, do not just talk, do not just show pictures, do not just give details. Vary what you do so the audience remains stimulated. An audience will become bored more easily when everything is the same. You've seen death by power-point haven't you, when the next slide looks the same as the last, and the next slide looks the same again, and the next slide looks the same again? Variety keeps the audience on the edge of their seats wondering what comes next.
Tip 4. Dare to be different.
There is no need to do exactly the same as everyone else does when you present - this can be boring. If you are speaking at a conference and are the 4th speaker it may be far more interesting and stimulating if you do something different. If you are different just make sure you still get your key message across and are relevant. There are many ways to speak to an audience. There are many ways to get your message across. There is no one right way. Some of my best speeches have been when I have worked out a fresh new approach to a topic. Dare to be different.
By the way, I do have a speech on presentation skills I deliver at conferences, and presentation training is available as is 1-1 coaching.

Thanks to Angelee Deodhar, one of our Confidence 4 U readers in India, for this fortnight's joke.
Beethoven's grave
All the scientists were talking about the sounds coming out of Beethoven's grave. They came from far and wide to listen, ears to the ground. Then they gathered in a conference room to compare notes. Finally, after a long conference, they all came to the same conclusion: Beethoven was decomposing.
If you have some clean jokes we can use, please send your contributions to
May your public speaking be interesting and engaging so your audience listens to your ideas and information.
